DigiLocker: How to Access and Share Government Documents Online

DigiLocker is a Government of India digital document platform that lets citizens access, share and verify authentic digital documents issued by participating government departments and institutions.

DigiLocker is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology under the Digital India programme. The official platform describes it as a secure cloud-based platform for storage, sharing and verification of documents and certificates.

What can you find in DigiLocker?

Depending on the issuing authority and your records, DigiLocker can provide access to documents such as driving licences, vehicle registration certificates, marksheets, certificates and other government-issued records. Availability differs by issuer and state.

How to create or access a DigiLocker account

  1. Open digilocker.gov.in.
  2. Choose the registration or login option.
  3. Complete the identity/mobile verification requested by the platform.
  4. After signing in, explore the document/issuer services available to you.

How to fetch an issued document

  1. Sign in to DigiLocker.
  2. Open the section for issued documents or document search.
  3. Select the relevant issuer, such as a board, university, transport department or other participating authority.
  4. Enter the details requested by that issuer.
  5. After successful verification, the document can appear in your Issued Documents section.

How to share a DigiLocker document

Use the share option provided for the document and select the available sharing method. Where a verifier accepts DigiLocker documents, the recipient can use the verification mechanism associated with the issued record.

Why use an issued document?

The key advantage is that an issued digital document is linked to the issuing authority rather than being simply a scanned copy uploaded by the user. This can make verification easier for participating organisations.

What if your document is missing?

  • Check whether the issuing authority is available in DigiLocker.
  • Confirm that the personal details you entered match the issuer’s records.
  • Try the issuer/document search again after checking the required identifiers.
  • If the issuer has not integrated the relevant record, DigiLocker may not be able to fetch it.

Safety tips

  • Use only the official DigiLocker website or app.
  • Never share OTPs or passwords with someone claiming to be a DigiLocker support agent.
  • Do not upload unnecessary identity documents to random websites offering to “activate” DigiLocker.
